The truth is, of course, that it doesn't really fit anywhere, which is one of the reasons we like it so much, I guess.Dr Jack Rosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01805945600952222957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29676463.post-83232948954902598692021-02-06T12:17:50.669+13:002021-02-06T12:17:50.669+13:00Thank you for this post and the links! Since John Lang travels from New York to England and from England travels south, I've always felt Islandia was in the south Atlantic. The Arab and African influence on the Karain continent makes it seem obvious as well. But that debate is minor in comparison to the detailed life Wright gives to Islandia and its people.Bish Denhamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13359927719391990534noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29676463.post-8009343595924935912019-07-17T14:00:52.977+12:002019-07-17T14:00:52.977+12:00Wright seems to have associated the Karain with an...Wright seems to have associated the Karain with an Arab civilization (Saracens); the description of the city of Mobono is reminiscent of Baghdad or Khartoum. The Bants are obviously Bantu, and the towns and names (M'popo, Fisiji) seem more southern African.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29676463.post-1510080729087757872019-07-06T08:23:15.025+12:002019-07-06T08:23:15.025+12:00Thanks, Martin. Yes, I had the same thought about 'Karain' - though the native races of this particular 'sub-continent' seem more African than South-East Asian to me. Wright started writing the book around 1905, when Conrad's influence would have been at its height, so 'Karain' would presumably have been known to him - Tales of Unrest, if I'm not mistaken ...Dr Jack Rosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01805945600952222957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29676463.post-72332144281862416772019-07-05T17:50:39.129+12:002019-07-05T17:50:39.129+12:00Great post, Jack - thank you!
