I memorised one or two of them. The book was 'Emily Dickonson: A Poet's Grammar' by Christanne Miller and I also have 'Emily Dickinson' (a biography and part lit. assessment etc by Cynthia Griffin Wolf. That's the "book" person's side of things. Talking of difficulty (not only of understanding as such, but of engaging or wanting to) Dickinson seemed to me to be too abstract, almost too enigmatic. This is a phenomena that I think would have stopped such as Higginson or other publishing her. But I think Millar's book convinced me more and the techniques used clearly place her as a modernist. By the way, I see everyone on courses studied but not Dickinson. I would put her with Whitman, Stein and the others we know about as an influence on the 'march of [poetic] events...

I didn't know the launch was on I cant recall what has kept me from looking here...Still I would like to get a copy of Michelle Leggott's book. Obviously she stands with Smithyman, Curnow (both) and other names in NZ and even international literature.

DIA fascinated me as a book. I don't think, as with many poems or poets, that I understood the whole project or thing but it certainly 'communicated before it was understood'...

It is good Leggott has put out another book. I think I have most of her poems either bought new at Auckland University or from S/H bookshops. I'll get a copy of it.

That cover is good for sure! Thanks for this post Jack and my best wishes go to Michelle Leggott in her continuing life and art.Richardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10272507198753290435noreply@blogger.com
