Those of you who've been keeping up with this blog know my views on Gabriel White's video and photographic work. I wrote a review of his previous film Aucklantis (2006) here and a brief account of our own collaborations A Town Like Parataxis (2000) and The Perfect Storm (2000) here.

On Thursday he's launching his latest work Tongdo Fantasia. This film has been a long time in the making. It's been refined and recut until it represents the essence of a Westerner's alienation - and, at the same time, paradoxically, curious at-homeness - in a strange new cultural setting: in this case, South Korea.

A suite of photographs from the work were included in Landfall 214. These, and hopefully more besides, will be on exhibition at OUi boutique for the next month. So come on up to K Rd this Thursday to check it out. You really won't regret it.

Reading at Poetry Live this Tuesday

Trapped within the Topographical Diagram of the Kingdom, Yuan Hong was deluded by fantasies. Anything he thought of appeared before his eyes. he thought of a river, and a river appeared before him; he thought of a mountain, and suddenly he saw one. he could see and have anything he pleased. He forgot himself, and unconsciously turned back into an ape ... But before long, he saw Yang Jian coming toward him with a sword.

POETRY LIVE

tuesday 5th August 2008
8 pm onwards
at the Classic Studio
upstairs at 321 Queen Street

Guest Poet: Jack Ross

Jack Ross's latest novel, EMO, came out in June this year from Titus Books. To date he has published three full-length poetry collections: City of Strange Brunettes (Pohutukawa Press, 1998), Chantal's Book (HeadworX, 2002) and To Terezín (Massey, 2007), as well as two novels, two books of short fiction, and several poetry chapbooks. He edited, with Jan Kemp, the bestselling trilogy of CD / text anthologies Classic, Contemporary& New NZ Poets in Performance (AUP, 2006-8).

He (with the indispensable assistance of Bronwyn Lloyd) will be reading from his latest work-in-progress, The Puppet Oresteia.

Guest Musician: Simen Taylor

Simen Taylor's musical roots lie in old style piano blues and American folk; which he reinterprets with electricity, sweat, and swamp drawl. His live performances swing from being insanely fast to intensely slow - often all in the same song!

You can catch Simen solo, or with his three piece band: The Blue Devils. Whatever your taste in music you will agree: this twenty seven year old delivers authentic Rythym n' Blues, and Soul, with kick-ass punch. This is piano work on steroids!

Simen also plays with Tim Finn, The Darcy Perry Band, Darren Watson, and other renowned artists.

Poetry Central 08

So the launch of our third AUP CD / Text anthology, New New Zealand Poets in Performance, is on Friday, 18th July, in the late afternoon (5.30 to 7 pm), at the Auckland Central Library, as part of the Montana Poetry day celebrations.

Other times have been advertised, but are incorrect - the above are final confirmed details of the event.

There's an article by Jennifer Little about the book already up on Massey News online (it was published a bit more expeditiously than we thought, so the reference to the launch "last Friday" should read "this coming Friday") ...

The event will begin with the launch of Bob Orr's latest book of poems, Calypso, then segue into readings by a number of the "New NZ Poets" included in our anthology. Anna Jackson, Therese Lloyd, Mark Pirie and Chris Price have all confirmed they'll be there, but there may be some others as well on the night. Each of us will read one of our own poems, followed by one by another poet from the book who can't be there, so you can expect a pretty wide coverage of modern NZ Poetry. The event will be MC'ed by Poet Laureate Michele Leggott, who will also be launching both books.

Similarly, the performance by Anna Rugis and myself ("Traffic in Gold"), at the New Art gallery coffee lounge on the corner of Wellesley and Lorne Sts, will take place between 1 pm and 2 pm on Saturday 19th July, as a kind of prequel to the Auckland Art Gallery's Winter Warmers series.

Other times have been advertised, but are incorrect - this is final confirmed information about the event.

The Winter Warmers series is planned to continue every Saturday afternoon until Spring (further details are available on the Art Gallery website). I should stress that the performances will normally run from 2 to 4 pm, and will include a varied line-up of readers and musicians.

After Anna and I have finished our lunchtime show, the series proper will kick off with Jen Crawford reading from her recently published poetry collection bad appendix and continue with a set of songs from "Chanson" by Anna Rugis, Linn Lorkin & Hershal Herscher.

I'm told there might be something about this in the Weekend Herald ...

All I can say about our own performance is that it will include poems and prose extracts from my recent novel EMO, published by Titus Books earlier this year, as well as a number of songs from Anna's new CD Traffic in Gold.

Anna's CD, and Jen's and my books, will all be on sale, so please bring your chequebook in case you get inspired to go one further in supporting us local artists! Only if you like what you hear, of course.

It's the third time Anna and I have performed together at the Art Gallery on or around Poetry Day, and both previous shows were pretty kick-ass (though I say it who shouldn't). This time we hope to outdo ourselves.
